Systemic family therapy

What does systemic mean?
Systemic family therapy is a form of psychotherapy that views a person's health and illness, as well as their personal quality of life, in the context of their relevant relationships and life concepts.

Systemic therapy is an independent psychotherapeutic method and is the generic term for a variety of approaches and models that have developed from couple and family therapy. Systemic therapists work with individuals, couples, families and support systems. In addition to clinical application, systemic thinking is also reflected in other professional areas such as (organizational) consulting, supervision, further education and training.

Guiding principles
The aim of systemic family therapy is to work with clients to find and develop solutions to their problems and to support them in implementing them. The following aspects characterize the therapeutic process:

  • Contextual understanding of individual and interpersonal symptoms, disorders and problems.
  • The insight that problems are fundamentally "created" and maintained in communicative processes.
  • Therapy and counselling cannot bring about targeted changes in behaviour from the outside, but only represent a potential stimulus for self-change in dynamic, self-organized social systems.
  • The main focus is on resources and the search for starting points for solutions.
  • All participants in such a cooperation network are met with an appreciative attitude.
