With around 100 billion nerve cells, the brain is one of the most fascinating organs in the human body. As part of a complex interplay, it enables us to perform very special abilities such as consciousness, remembering, thinking, learning, feeling and sensing, which are often altered in the context of psychiatric illnesses. Similar to many other illnesses, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, psychiatric illnesses are caused by the interaction of biological and environmental factors, including developmental and psychosocial factors.
The field of psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine focuses on the diversity of these functions and their underlying biopsychosocial mechanisms, the consideration of which forms the basis for successful treatment. The focus is always on the person in their unique individuality. Thanks to significant medical progress in the field of neuroscience and clinical psychiatry, precise diagnostics and a treatment strategy that is individually and carefully selected for you can now be determined.
At WIENER COUCH, you can receive psychiatric support in an atmosphere of trust. Our specialists in psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine will take the time to talk to you about your personal concerns.
As part of further diagnostics, we may offer you neuropsychological tests at the Vienna Couch. If necessary, we will be happy to coordinate a physical examination including an electrocardiogram (ECG), laboratory tests (e.g. blood tests, urine tests) or imaging procedures (e.g. electroencephalography - EEG, magnetic resonance imaging - MRI) for you.
At WIENER COUCH, we primarily offer you psychotherapeutic and psychopharmacotherapeutic (= medication) options, which can be used effectively for the success of your treatment, both in acute phases and in the long term.
You are very welcome to contact our doctors directly at their respective telephone numbers and e-mail addresses regarding the exact conditions for specialist consultations and treatments.
The specialist field of psychiatry and psychotherapeutic medicine can therefore offer you valuable support, e.g. with
- Listlessness and joylessness, lack of energy and drive, as well as a depressed mood,
- Mood swings, persistently elevated or irritable mood, as well as energy surges with a reduced need to rest or sleep, which lead to changes in your behavior,
- fluctuations in mood and vitality associated with the season,
- Anxiety, inner restlessness, tension, sleep disorders, nightmares and brooding,
- Obsessive thoughts and compulsive actions,
- Hearing voices, changes in thinking, feelings of persecution, mistrust of your environment and/or fellow human beings, as well as the feeling of being influenced by them,
- Changes in the perception of one's own body or the environment
- physical complaints for which no cause has been found despite numerous diagnostic investigations and/or no lasting improvement has been achieved despite several attempts at therapy,
- increasing forgetfulness,
- Concentration and attention difficulties or slight distraction,
- the feeling that it is difficult to control one's own emotions and/or the need to hurt oneself,
- increased or difficult to control substance use (e.g. alcohol, medication*) and/or behavior (e.g. gambling, collecting),
- Changes in eating behavior,
- Tiredness of life,
- great suffering in everyday private or professional life.
Specialist psychiatric diagnostics
In the diagnosis of psychiatric illnesses, the specialist psychiatric examination is a central element that should be carried out first and foremost. This should take into account the broad spectrum of potential triggers so that an optimal therapy concept can then be designed efficiently. The expertise of colleagues from other professional groups, such as psychologists, can then be very valuable as part of the tailor-made diagnosis and therapy we aim to provide.
While modern and very well-tolerated drug treatment is the so-called basic therapy for most psychiatric illnesses, which can be effectively supplemented by non-psychopharmacotherapeutic strategies such as psychotherapy on an individual basis, the latter can also be used alone as part of monotherapy in mild cases. In this case, regular specialist psychiatric evaluation of the response to therapy is of particular importance in order to be able to optimize therapy in good time if necessary.
