What is esketamine, or Spravato®?
Esketamin ist ein verschreibungspflichtiger Arzneistoff, der als Nasenspray (Spravato®) unter ärztlicher Aufsicht angewendet wird. Er ist für Erwachsene mit therapieresistenter Depression zugelassen, ergänzend zu einem oralen Antidepressivum.
Who is this treatment suitable for?
Für Erwachsene mit therapieresistenter Depression – also wenn in der aktuellen Episode mindestens zwei Antidepressiva nicht ausreichend gewirkt haben. Ob die Behandlung für Sie geeignet ist, klärt eine fachärztliche Untersuchung.
How does the treatment work?
Zuerst ein fachärztliches Erstgespräch zur Abklärung, danach die ambulante Anwendung unter Aufsicht mit anschließender Nachbeobachtung. Die Einstellungsphase (Induktion) erfolgt stationär in einer Klinik; die Erhaltungsphase und die Fortführung übernehmen wir in der Wiener Couch.
How long does an appointment last?
Please allow enough time, including the follow-up observation period. Your blood pressure will be checked about 40 minutes after the procedure; after that, you will remain at the office until you are deemed stable enough by the doctor to go home. The observation period lasts about 1.5 to 2 hours at the office. We will discuss the estimated time frame with you in advance.
What are the possible side effects?
Temporary symptoms such as drowsiness, dizziness, nausea, or a brief rise in blood pressure may occur; these usually subside on their own. That is precisely why follow-up monitoring is conducted at the doctor’s office.
Will I be allowed to drive a car myself after that?
Nein. Fahren Sie nach der Anwendung nicht selbst und üben Sie bis zum nächsten Tag – nach einem erholsamen Schlaf – keine Tätigkeiten aus, die volle Aufmerksamkeit erfordern, wie Autofahren oder das Bedienen von Maschinen. Bitte organisieren Sie Ihre Heimfahrt im Voraus.
What about the costs?
Spravato® requires a prescription and approval; coverage of the costs depends on the individual case, and we will assist you with the application process. If your health insurance company grants approval, it will cover the cost of the medication. The fee for care and monitoring at our practice may be partially reimbursed by your health insurance company. We will discuss the specific costs transparently during a personal consultation.
Who decides whether the treatment is appropriate?
Only a medical specialist may make a diagnosis as part of the evaluation. Self-diagnosis is not possible.
